Unfinished Campaign: Closure of Salmmah Women’s Center in Sudan was a Great Blow for Civil Liberties in Sudan

On 24th June, the director of Salmmah Women’s Resource Center, Ms. Fahima Hashim was presented with a decree from the Sudanese Ministry of Justice, ordering the cancellation of her NGO. A five-person committee came in to oversee the Company’s dissolution process. No reason was given for this decision, and the dissolution committee kept their identity undisclosed and prevented any visitors from staying in the premises.

Will Victims of Rape in Sudan See Justice?

In its final report to the Secretary-General, UNAMID recorded 66 cases with 99 total victims (thirty minors) of conflict-related sexual violence. 36 of those cases were reported to law enforcement agencies. Only nine cases were ever investigated, resulting in a grand total of four arrests. In the report, nearly 70% of victims described the alleged perpetrators as unidentified armed men, and 32 victims reported that the perpetrators were members of the Sudanese armed forces (Rapid Support Forces and Government Police).

Ripples of Change: WELDD Builds Feminist Leadership Across Africa and the Middle East

In 2013, WELDD held workshops in the MENA and Sehal regions to build women’s leadership and political participation. The results were hugely successful; young female activists from Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Senegal, Niger and Mali emerged invigorated and with a renewed sense of purpose.
