Women's Empowerment and Leadership Development for Democratisation
In September 2012 the International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN) convened the first regional “What the Women Say” MENA/South Asia Forum on Rights, Peace and Security. This group of peace and women’s rights experts, practitioners, activists and scholars met to draw on the framework provided by UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security to compare and contrast the fast-paced changes in the region. They offered sobering insight into ongoing developments, while highlighting the critical work of women in promoting rights and dignity for all, justice and reconciliation, human security and democracy. They also represent the aspirations of a wide cross-section of the public in the region, but they lack the infrastructure or resources to amplify their message. The findings here reflect the key emergent themes, and priorities.
