Nigeria: The cases of two women sentenced to death in Bauchi state
Following reports from the media about the cases of two young women sentenced to death by stoning in Bauchi State under the Sharia legal system, BAOBAB For Women’s Human Rights has conducted a fact-finding mission to the State.
The two cases involving Hajara Ibrahim who is eighteen years old from Lere Local Government Area of Bauchi State and Daso Adamu from Ningi Local Government were confirmed.
Both women have both appealed against the judgment. BAOBAB For Women’s Human Rights has provided legal representation for the two women.
Daso Adamu’s case came up for hearing on October 20th 2004 at Upper Shari’a Court, Ningi and has been adjourned till November 3rd 2004. Daso Adamu who was detained in Ningi Prisons with her three-month-old daughter has been released on bail following the intervention of BAOBAB’s legal representative.
The Appeal of Hajara Ibrahim, who is seven months pregnant, is scheduled for hearing on October 25th 2004. Both women, in an interview with our representative, stated that the judgment was unfair and unjust to them and should therefore be quashed.
The firm of lawyers handling the cases is authorized to see the appeal process through its various stages until justice is not only done, but also seen to be done.
