Jordan: Amendments to citizenship law still await final cabinet approval

Recent announcement to introduce a law allowing Jordanian women married to foreign men to pass their citizenship on to their children.
The long-awaited decision, announced by Her Majesty Queen Rania during the opening of the 2nd Arab Women's Summit held in Amman in November 2003, was greeted by many women activists with a sigh of relief, even though the suggested amendments were conditioned upon the approval of the Council of Ministers. The amendments to the Citizenship Law allow women married to non-Jordanians to pass citizenship on to their children, although a woman could not pass citizenship on to her husband.
