Post-2015 Advocacy Toolkit

Post-2015 Advocacy Toolkit

21/07/2015

Girls Not Brides have created this toolkit because we are at a critical time in the discussions on the next set of global development goals. Child, early and forced marriage and the needs of adolescent girls were notably missing from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which directly hindered the achievement of six of the eight MDGs. We must act now to ensure that child, early and forced marriage is included in the new development framework.

Every Child Deserves a Childhood

16/06/2015

In Afghanistan, Foundation of Solidarity for Justice Organisation (FSJO) is striving to ensure every child gets to have a childhood.

Here, girls are married off as young as six; forty-six percent are wedded before the age of eighteen. According to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, between sixty to eighty percent of all marriages in Afghanistan are forced, and one in four Afghani women aged twenty to twenty-four have had their first child before eighteen.

To tackle this issue, the FSJO launched workshops in the provinces of Kabul and Parwan between August and December 2013. They aimed to raise a keen awareness on the epidemic, and to breed a social attitude of active discouragement against the practice.

The Reformer of Wringin Sukowono

10/06/2015

In Indonesia’s East Java Jember District, Najma Milla, a young lady in the village of Wringin Sukowono is steadily making waves.

Ms. Milla is an alumna of RAHIMA (one of WELDD’s partner programme in Indonesia), which is an organization that advocates women’s equality based on modern and democratic ideas, and emphasizes its presence on a grassroots level. Ms. Milla is a breath of fresh air: with her husband Nurul, she is establishing an Islamic public-cum-boarding school (pesantren) not solely based on religion. Her pesantren would be the first school of its kind in the village.
