And all of a sudden, in a New York Times magazine years ago, there was a woman that was writing about her experiences studying Russian literature at Columbia. So its critical in the player review that we do 3 times a year is you review all the data with them. I mean, I absolutely hate it. I love the immediacy of the feedback, and all of a sudden we stole that stuff. For example, the first core value is we dont whine. It is paired with the following quote from George Bernard Shaw: The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. It would make you think twice before complaining about a lack of playing time, or anything else. The Schoolsframework strategic planning document identifies a set of core values that have been just as important in our success. By the end of the season, weve got a cauldron rank in every single practice for the entire year, and it dictates where youre going to go. In the performance review a lot of the review is done by themselves, because what most of us have is we all develop a personal narrative. I want them to basically be wonderful leaders, and the principles of our core values, or what we try to drive everyone in the program to live. I assume thats where you probably look at a lot of this data. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. And of course my whole evolution has been trial and error. Theres another level in you. And they all have these stories, oh, I spent, you know, time with this one person that was, you know, one of my bottom salesmen and then within 6 months he was my top salesman. -Nelson Henderson~1860. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. But Im going to, you know, Im going to conform to the B.S. And I was thinking, this is incredible. So what we did is we took our 12 core values and we assigned a motivational quote attached to each one, and we ask every one of our players to memorize all of these motivational quotes attached to each core value. And all of a sudden, at the end of the practice, the assistant managers with their clipboards sprint to the scores table, and there at the scores table is the head manager, and hes grabbing this stuff from all of his associates. She was so frustrated with her professional coach. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. Melissa: And where do you seek these new ideas? And heres whats critical in the performance review. And hes won more than 800. Anson: So I would love to have that superpower. I think right now in the corporate world were in a place where weve got so much data, but not yet a lot of insight. So you call up your mom because obviously shes sympathetic, or your dad if hes the more sympathetic one, and you talk about the injustice of the universe, about how youre kicking everyones ass in practice, even though thats absolutely not true, because youre looking at the data every single day after practice on the bulletin board and youre ranked in the bottom 5% of the team, and all this sort of stuff is telling you youre not working that hard. Back in my day, we were accountable for our grades and our parents held us responsible for our performance. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. And even if its delusional I still wont touch it. Its a huge mistake to recruit talent. Melissa: So its been fun for me because I went through the process, as I was getting ready for this interview I read about you and I watched some interviews that you gave, and I have to tell you I was positively blown away by your numbers. And at the end of his address, he turns around. And obviously our history is so good at projecting this they have to make a change if they want to get there. And this is something I learned from Jack Welch because I spent several years working for FranklinCovey and he was our keynote speaker. Your function is the bottom line. And so what is critical is, you know, who we end up recruiting. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. All these kids that Ive convinced to transfer have gone someplace and maybe played more minutes, and then some of these kids now and I have connected in the most positive way, just because now theyve looked back and seen that Ive treated them very well. Anson:I love it. Yes. To paraphrase Alex Ferguson of Man United fame, We want to take responsibility for our own action, our own errors, our own performance level, and eventually for every result.. One of the greatest compliments Ive ever been given by any player Ive ever coached was a kid of mine that was playing in the pro leagues. So how have you been able to take those conversations that you have using this data to create a more positive motivational environment around feedback? Every year, Dorrance gives his players a series of assessments (including the Grit Scale ) and makes them memorize literary quotes that represent the team's values. And of course these are, you know, very successful CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and their top managerial staff, and every one of them has paid like, you know, $20,000 to be in the room, and of course theyre righteously indignant with this incredibly successful man telling them to fall on the bottom 10% of their workforce. I want them to basically treat people with extraordinary compassion and kindness. But heres what youve got to do. So from then on weve shared with everyone where they are. Some are much more important than others, and we make very clear which ones are. They are sprinting all over the place going from one session to the other, there was no break. 1-on-1 is your ability to beat someone off the dribble or stop them. Anson: Well, actually, I mean, Ive got a lot of others that I can throw out there for you, because let me tell you about potential. I took this right into my coaching profession. Because we recruit extraordinary talent. And in a very low voice she said yes. Anson: to protect them from being responsible for success. I mean, thats why it drives me nuts, you know, when I look at all these different people that claim to be developing leaders. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. But she said basically between your criticism, I could feel your love. How core values in sports transcends to the workplace with Anson Dorrance. And so for me its all about trying to figure out a way to sort out their character before you hire them. Anson: And if the kid treated the parents poorly he wouldnt offer them a scholarship because obviously if the kid doesnt treat the parents poorly the kids not going to treat him well or his culture well. But there is a line, and if their average is under a 3.0 in that line and youre on scholarship, we try to get that girl to transfer, and if shes not on scholarship we try to get her to quit the team. In the old days, because I love reading business books, Ive read all the business books of best sellers and Ive read them all. In fact the Lady Tar Heels have won 22 of the 36 NCAA soccer championships. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right. And Id love to tell you something differently, but I just dont have an effective tool yet. Now obviously I need verbal leaders. Your companies will succeed based on who you hire. But through this love, love of family, love of neighborhood, love of community, love of the people that work for you and the people you serve, the customers, because hes also a free enterprise, this unbelievable man, Arthur Blank is. But a lot of what goes on, I think, that takes us and our teams to our potential is our capacity to motivate the players that are in our environment. And so I go into the session, Im invited there with every one of my staff members. Were not going to memorize poetry. Now if I say you are a leader, heres the way youre going to have to qualify. But let me tell you what the truth is. You can just make. And so I want to sort of leave that with all of you, but I am not an authority on this, please, I am just a womens soccer coach at the university of North Carolina. So every kid comes in with a personal narrative that protects them from pain and accountability. And this was extraordinary. In my experience its a crock. If I have a 30 player roster at the end of every night, I have three analytics boys that are getting degrees in statistics here, convert that days practice into data and theyre ranked, theyre ranked from one to 30. It has become the foundation of . But theres some that arent going to make it, and they just, they dont believe it. His 12 core values have been used a So obviously lets change the order. Melissa: So Ive read a lot about you and your teams core values, which I am a huge believer in core values. And now whats happening is we have all gone to the dogs. Anson: Well, Im one of these guys that, you know, loves to read. It can save the United States, but it has to be done in the right way. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. So, you know, we had this insipid, you know, core value about working hard, but theres nothing motivational about this core value of working hard because that inspires no one. Anson Dorrance, coach of the UNC women's soccer team, built one of the greatest dynasties in any sport at any level. And of course theyre going to agree with me, I think I am better. Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. But it doesnt mean like we stumbled upon all the great things immediately. But the amount of energy it required was overwhelming. And I learned about this when I was working for Franklin Covey. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. So those three fundamental things, basically the core values, which is character construction, the competitive cauldron, which is basically mentality construction. Heres your free first shooting percentage, heres whether you box out or failed to, heres whether you won or lost, everything is there. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. And even though, basically I made the presentation to him and his and this is executive staff like Ive made to your listeners, I learned more reading that book, and what I loved about it is getting back to the principle of loving those you lead, loving those you coach, loving those you, teach because he clearly does.
