Although not always purposively, students sometimes determine what they learn by spontaneously displaying an interest in a subject or phenomenon they encounter. The main disadvantage of an emergent strategy is that it isn't predictable, and therefore can't be planned. Some teachers find these demands overwhelming. What becomes clear is the need for teacher education and for educators to grasp the challenges and opportunities to assert their power over shaping the curriculum process that will produce competent, confident teachers.
